Member Exhibition and Reception (I'll have two new works!) Saturday, July 18

Member's Exhibition - Crossroads Art Center

Cenote Xbatun, Yucatan, Mexico

I hope you can stop by to enjoy two of my larger works this coming weekend.

Crossroads Art Center's Member Exhibition opens July 18 and runs through September 6. Opening Receptions take place this weekend (July 18/19), both Saturday and Sunday. I plan to be there on and off both days, with a scheduled presence on Saturday between noon and 2 pm).

Cenote X'batun

Cenote X'batun depicts the beautiful colors and light of a cenote I visited this past February in Yucatan.

Cenotes are natural sinkholes filled with fresh water. Yucatan's cenotes formed nearly 66 million years ago, when a giant meteor, the Chicxulub impactor, struck its shallow sea. This impact ended the age of the dinosaurs.

Over time, thousands of cenotes formed in the Yucatan, which created "skylights" into a continuous system of flooded cave tunnels and underground rivers that can stretch for hundreds of miles. This explains the stunning clarity and cool temperature of cenote water. Rainwater is meticulously filtered through deep limestone rock, offering natural purification. The Yucatan has virtually no surface rivers because all the water drains directly into the porous limestone.

For the ancient Maya, cenotes were therefore not just scenic wonders; they were an indispensable source of life--the only reliable year-round water supply in a dense jungle. They were considered sacred portals to the underworld.

A Walk Along Denmark Shores

Denmark Shores

This painting captures the special light and peace of Skagen, Denmark, the country's northernmost corner, which inspired generations of painters. Among its most famous were painters of the late 1800s, Karl Madsen and Michael Ancher, who painted the locals and the fishermen of this quaint village, along with others who became known as "The Skagen Painters."

My husband and I were lucky enough to visit in 2025 and to enjoy this beautiful spot and the works of some of its iconic painters at the Skagen Museum.

I hope you enjoy these works and might stop by and say hello, or just come by between this weekend and September to see all of the amazing work of Richmond artists at Crossroads Art Center, 2016 Staples Mill Road, Richmond, VA 23230.
